[Album Review]
지난 생활음악 시리즈 21집이 대중음악 작곡가들의 창작국악 작업이었다면 22집은 대중음악과의 장르를 과감한 넘나드는, 그간 국립국악원의 행보에서는 도저히 상상할 수 없는 결과물이라고 해도 과언이 아니다.

음반을 기획하며 ‘생활 음악’, ‘국악의 생활화’에 대해 수많은 질문을 던져 보았다.

정형화된 선율 진행, 장단 등 기존의 창작 국악을 답습하지 않고 어디서든 편하게 들을 수 있고 쉽게 흥얼거릴 수 있는 새로운 국악이길 바랐다. 이러한 바람의 연장선으로 전통 악곡과 요즘 힙한 장르 간의 연계성이나 전통 악곡에서 연상되는 현대적 개연성을 찾는 일련의 스토리텔링을 진행했다. 소재는 가곡, 가사, 민요, 잡가, 단가 등으로 각기 다양했고 여기에 댄스팝, 시티팝, 뭄바톤, 일레트로닉, 발라드 등 현대적 감수성이 입혀져, 지금을 살아가는 ‘나’와 ‘우리’의 이야기를 담아낸 4개의 싱글(총 17트랙)이 탄생됐다.

희로애락을 함께했던 전통 악곡들이 이제는 일상의 일부이자 진정한 생활 음악으로 자리매김하길!



[Song Review]

01. 동짓달 Winter Solstice
황진이의 시조, 우조 이수대엽<동짓달 기나긴 밤을…>을 소재로 한 곡.
청아한 고음, 시김새 등 여창 가곡의 돋보이는 특징을 세련되게 재해석한 노래다.

Based on ujoisudaeyeop(second chapter of gagok) set to Hwang Jini’s poem, “Long and long night of winter solstice…”
The song offers a trendy reinterpretation of the characteristics of gagok sung by women such as clear high notes and sigimsae (embellishment).

02. 낙원가(죽지사) Nakwonga
12가사 <죽지사>를 소재로 한 곡.
깨끗하고 시원한 느낌이 주를 이루고 있다. <죽지사> 원곡의 멜로디를 적극 차용하고 새로운 선율과의 조화로움을 시도하고 있다. 결과적으로 원곡에 숨겨져 있던 다양한 감정들을 세상 밖으로 나오게 한다.

Based on “Jukjisa” of the twelve gasa(narrative song).
Witha clear, exhilarating resonance, the song adopts the original melody of “Jukjisa” to experiment with new melodies and harmony. It ultimately finds and unveils diverse sentiments hidden in the original song.

03. 육자배기 Yukjabaegi
남도 잡가 <육자배기>를 소재로 한 곡.
육자배기의 6박을 3박으로 축소한 도드리장단(세마치 두 장단)으로 부른다. 자진육자배기-삼산은반락-개고리타령 순으로 노래하며 현악 오케스트라와 피아노의 합주를 통해 육자배기만의 진한 감성을 더욱 깊이 있게 표현하고 있다.

Based on the Namdojapga (miscellaneous song)“Yukjabaegi.”
The song has adodeuri-jagdangrhythm that alters the 6-beat tempo of “Yukjabaegi” to 3 beats. Sung in the order of “Jajin Yukjabaegi”, “Samsaneun Ballak,” and “Gaegori Taryeong,” the song expresses the deep poignancy of “Yukjabaegi” through a string orchestra and the piano.

04. 꿈이로다(흥타령) Heung Taryeong
남도 민요 <흥타령>을 소재로 한 곡.
요즘 가장 유행하는 음악 장르 중 하나인 뭄바톤(Moombahton)을 장구와 드럼의 음색으로 표현한 곡이다. 장구가 뭄바톤의 기본 리듬을 연주하며, 판소리(Pansori)는 고유의 특성을 살리면서도 싱잉랩(Singing Rap)처럼 표현되어 아이러니하면서도 조화로운 음악으로 탄생하였다.

Based on the Namdominyo(folk song) “Heung Taryeong.”
One of the most popular music genres these days, moombahton, is reinterpreted with the janggu and drums. While the Korean drum janggu plays the basic rhythm, traditional characteristics of pansori blend with singing rap to create music that is full of irony and harmony.

05. 사철가 Sacheolga
단가 <사철가>를 모티브로 한 힙합 감성의 곡.
사계의 변화, 변함없는 자연에 비해 해마다 늙어가는 인생무상을 덤덤하게 묘사하고 있으며, 팝적인 창법과 남도소리 창법이 묘한 대조를 이루며 잔잔한 여운을 남기는 노래다.

‘세월아 세월아 세월아 가지마라 아까운 청춘들이 다 늙는다
세월아 세월아 세월아 가지마라 가는 세월을 어쩔거나’

A song with hip-hop sounds based on the danga(short song) “Sacheolga.”
It calmly sings about the changing seasons and the vanity of mortal life compared to permanent nature.
The song lingers softly asthe two vocal styles of pop and Namdo music create an oddly beautiful juxtaposition.

Time, time, time, don’t go, precious youth is turning old
Time, time, time, don’t go, what can be done about time passing.”
