[Album Review]
지난 생활음악 시리즈 21집이 대중음악 작곡가들의 창작국악 작업이었다면 22집은 대중음악과의 장르를 과감한 넘나드는, 그간 국립국악원의 행보에서는 도저히 상상할 수 없는 결과물이라고 해도 과언이 아니다.

음반을 기획하며 ‘생활 음악’, ‘국악의 생활화’에 대해 수많은 질문을 던져 보았다.

정형화된 선율 진행, 장단 등 기존의 창작 국악을 답습하지 않고 어디서든 편하게 들을 수 있고 쉽게 흥얼거릴 수 있는 새로운 국악이길 바랐다. 이러한 바람의 연장선으로 전통 악곡과 요즘 힙한 장르 간의 연계성이나 전통 악곡에서 연상되는 현대적 개연성을 찾는 일련의 스토리텔링을 진행했다. 소재는 가곡, 가사, 민요, 잡가, 단가 등으로 각기 다양했고 여기에 댄스팝, 시티팝, 뭄바톤, 일레트로닉, 발라드 등 현대적 감수성이 입혀져, 지금을 살아가는 ‘나’와 ‘우리’의 이야기를 담아낸 4개의 싱글(총 17트랙)이 탄생됐다.

희로애락을 함께했던 전통 악곡들이 이제는 일상의 일부이자 진정한 생활 음악으로 자리매김하길!



[Song Review]

01. 싸름 Ssareum
여름 밤 매미 우는 소리를 표현한 황해도 민요 <싸름타령>을 소재로 한 곡.
여름, 매미라는 키워드와 싸름이라는 단어에서 연상되는 시원함이 모티브가 된 City Pop.
원곡의 사설‘싸름싸름 너도 나도 살살 다 녹여낸다’를 세련되고 낭만적인 감성으로 풀어냈다.

Based on the Hwanghae-do minyo (folk song) “SsareumTaryeong,”whichreinterprets the sound of cicadas on summer nights.
This city popsongtakes its motif from the keywords summer, cicadas, and ssareum(cicada in Hwanghae-do dialect). The original refrain, “Ssareum,ssareum, softens me and you,” isdeliveredwith trendy, romantic sounds.

02. 이야홍타령 Iyahong Taryeong
제주 민요 <이야홍타령>을 소재로 한 곡.
사설에 나오는‘이야홍’은 의미의 표현보다는 감흥과 율조에 영향을 미치는 구절(여음)이다.
고양이 울음소리를 연상케 하는 여음‘이야홍’에서 영감을 얻어 고양이의 밤 산책을 노래하고 있다.
고양이 울음과 소리가 닮아있기도 하고 예민 보스라는 공통점도 가진 국악기, 해금이 등장하여 이야홍타령의 밝고 경쾌한 특징 더욱 잘 살려주고 있는 보사노바(bossa nova)곡.

‘이야홍 야홍 그렇구 말구요. 야홍 이야홍 다고를 말이야
이야홍 소리에 정 떨어졌구나 이야홍 그렇구말구요.’

Based on the Jeju-minyo(folk song)“Iyahong Taryeong.”
The word “iyahong” does not carry a meaning, but acts as a lingering tone that plays with the sentiments and rhythm of the song.
Inspired by the sound of meowing, the song sketches a picture of a cat’s night stroll.
Featuring the Korean instrument haegeum, which resembles cats in its sound and sensitivity, this bossa nova rearrangement brings out the bright, cheerful characteristics of “Iyahong Taryeong.”

Iyahong, yahong, that’s right, yahong, iyahong,all will say it
You’re tired of iyahong sound, iyahong that’s right.

03. 매화타령 Maehwa Taryeong
경기 잡가 <매화타령>을 소재로 한 곡.
경기 민요 특유의 밝고 유장한 분위기를 자아내며. 경기 12잡가 중 <달거리> 끝에도 붙는 굿거리장단의 노래다.
남녀 간 상사의 정을 읊은 원곡에 서정적인 멜로디와 가사를 더해 세련된 팝으로 재창작했다.

Based on the Gyeonggi japga (miscellaneous song) “MaehwaTaryeong.”
With bright, laid back sounds that characterize Gyeonggi folk songs, “Maehwa Taryeong”with the gutgeorijangdan rhythm is also played at the end of “Dalgeori”of the twelve japga from Gyeonggi-do Province.
A poignant melody and lyrics have been added to the original love theme in this modern pop version of the song.

04. 배꽃타령 Baekkoch Taryeong
황해도 민요 <배꽃타령>을 소재로 한 곡.
브릿지 부분의‘얼씨구나 좋다. 절시구나 좋아. 얼사 절사 지화자’와‘배꽃일세 배꽃이야…’등 원곡의 사설에 빠른 템포의 사운드를 가미한 록적인 하우스곡.
Based on the Hwanghae-do minyo“Baekkoch Taryeong.”
A fast-tempo house number with rock sounds added to the famous original lyrics: “Eolssiguna good, jeolssiguna good, eolssa, jeolsa, jihwaja” and “It’s pear blossoms, pear blossoms….”
